Crowns

A crown or cap is dental restoration that completely covers a tooth, it is often needed when a tooth requires a very large filling or is heavily broken down.

Firstly all surfaces of the tooth are reduced to make way for the crown. A series of impressions are taken and a temporary crown or covering is placed to protect the tooth. The crown is made in a dental laboratory and is then fitted onto the tooth using a strong adhesive.

What are they made from?

Crowns can be made of:

  • alloys (mix of metals)
  • porcelain
  • porcelain bonded to precious metals
  • ceramics
  • gold

Your dentist will be happy to discuss the procedure in detail with you for both NHS and private options available to you.
